The Cryospheric Processes Laboratory in New York City (CRYOCITY) is located at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University. It was originally founded at the City College of New York in 2008 by Marco Tedesco and in 2016 it moved to Columbia University. Our goal is the study of processes occurring in the cryosphere, with special emphasis on continental snow and the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets.
Snow is a fundamental element of the hydrological and climatological cycles, and has a large economic impact on many states and countries. Humans, plants and animals depend on snow. Scientists are looking at snow very carefully for all these reasons, and more. Satellites and computer models can help us but limitations still exist, making measuring snow properties in the field crucial! Of course, scientists cannot be everywhere at anytime in the snow (though some of us wish we could!).
This is where citizen scientists, like you, come in. The power of community science is that all of us together can make many more measurements than any one person or any scientific team. We can cover more ground together!
